It's wonderful what a bicycle can do. No matter where you are!
In the U.S. Earn-A-Bike is well known for it's programs that help prevent youth obesity.
This year we are expanding our programs to help youth in Guatemala find better opportunities, fight hunger and poverty related diseases by partnering with the Asturias, Maldonado Foundation.
The Asturias Maldonado Foundation are pioneers in bringing education and health to rural children in Guatemala even before there was compulsory education, before it was acceptable to bring literacy to rural farm workers, or before the most basic labor rights were enshrined in labor codes.
The school was established almost a hundred years ago with health care provided by the physician owner, Dr. Francisco Asturias Castro y Doña Maria Maldonado Alvarado. Today, their children and grandchildren continue the legacy of Dr. Asturias continues through AMF/FAM educational and wellness programs that include family vegetable gardens, health screenings and water filtration systems, provided to the farm agricultural workers and families of nearby communities, in and around La Reforma, San Marcos.
On July 2017 help us take Earn A Bike to Guatemala.
On July 1st, 2017 come with us and let's take Earn-A-Bike to Guatemala.
In the U.S. we are blessed with resources, public services and unlimited transportation options. In countries like Guatemala, children often have to wake up at 5:00am and walk several miles to get to and from school. Imaging what a bicycle would mean to these children.
A bicycle to a child in Guatemala means much more than just fun riding around the block. It becomes a needed mode of transporation that allow them to go to school, return early to work on homework and finish their daily chores.
This year we plan to visit "Dos Marias" Coffee plantation, host the first Earn A Bike event in Guatemala and set up a small shop for bicycle repair and maintenance.
