Volunteer Job Descriptions
Bike Build - Each mentor is assigned a child. Each one gets a box and their challenge is to build their bike and make sure it is safe.

Helmets, Lights and Locks Activity - One volunteer is assigned a group of students. Their challenge is to come up with a story that explains why it is important to wear a helmet, use lights when riding and lock when storing their bikes.


Helmet Station - Students will be fitted for helmets with the help of a volunteer.


Light and Lock Station - Students will be given their lights and locks for their bikes.


Cycling Safety - This group of volunteers will be responsible for guiding participants through a bicycle mock course while teaching them basic safe riding skills. Star, stop, signal, rock dodge, emergency stop, quick swerve.


Breakfast, snack, lunch crews - This group of volunteers are responsible for setting up and serving the meals. Breakfast is for early volunteers and participants. Snack is for participants, parents and volunteers. Lunch is for participants, parents and volunteers.


Set up and tear down - This group of volunteers help us make the event possible. Set up tents, stations, bikes, tools, etc. Toward the end of the day, the teardown crew help us make sure we leave the grounds as we found them.


Registration - Volunteers make sure all participants get signed in, have signed releases and assign spots on the waiting list for participants that do not show up.


Parent engagement - Volunteers are responsible for assisting during presentations and guiding parents to designated locations


Helmet decorating - Volunteers will monitor students while helmets are being embellished, ensuring materials are being replenished and monitoring time.


​Bike Inspections - Safety is key. Volunteers will work with Crossroads bikes to inspect built bicycles for safety.

FAQs


  • How many volunteers is Earn-A-Bike looking for? We are looking to have 310 volunteers to help the event run smoothly. We would happily welcome individuals and groups to sign up and join in on the fun! 

  • Will the volunteers need to bring their own tools in order to build these bikes? Volunteers will be provided with the tools necessary for the build. No need to bring anything!

  • If signing up for the bike build, normally how many bikes will each volunteer get to build? Each volunteer that signs up for the bike build will be paired with a student. The student and volunteer will then build the bike together as a team. 

  • What is the volunteer shift time (Start and End Time)? Shift times vary depending on the job/position the individual has signed up for. Time slots range from 7am - 3pm and are detailed on the signup website. https://signup.com/go/yvpfzZd

  • Will breakfast and lunch will be provided? Yes, breakfast and lunch are provided for the volunteers. 

  • Where do volunteers report and is there a contact person that will provide the details? The event will take place at TBD on Dec. 11, 2021. More details are provided on our website www.earnabikecoop.org as well as the signup website https://signup.com/go/yvpfzZd and additional details will be provided to volunteers during packet pickup and email. Any specific questions can be directed towards the Program Manager, Jennifer Maldonado at jennifer@eabsa.org

  • What roles are there for volunteers? Volunteers have a variety of options to choose from on how they would like to volunteer. These include such responsibilities such as: set up/break down of event, bike build coach/mentor, breakfast crew, lunch crew, registration table, parent workshops, helmet decorating, bike inspections, helmet/lights/locks activity, bicycle safety course, social ride marshalls, lights and locks station. Each job has additional details on the role and responsibilities on our website and signup site.

  • Are there any other details I should know?  An awesome detail about is that this year, 160 students from Harlandale ISD will be working hard all semester to earn their bikes!
